Assertiveness for Everyone
Assertiveness is a core life skill. The goal is to stand up for yourself and your beliefs effectively while retaining respect for others. We sometimes think that being accommodating is the only way to be nice and that standing up for ourselves is mean. The truth is that when you suppress your needs, you're more likely to blurt your feelings in thoughtless ways or to act out your feelings indirectly. Besides preventing others from taking advantage of you, being your own advocate boosts your self-esteem. Learn what the difference is between assertiveness, aggressiveness, and passivity. Discover a simple formula for expressing yourself that you can adapt to different situations. And, in a supportive atmosphere, fine-tune and practice your skills through role-play. Sarabeth Bjorndahl is a licensed professional counselor in Denver. She has been in private practice for 27 years. She has taught Take Control of Your Life: Set Healthy Boundaries at CFU since 1993.
