Mushroom Growing at Home: The First Step
If you like the idea of growing your own food, consider mushrooms. They can be grown relatively easily in small space, if you know what you’re doing. There are four main phases in mushroom cultivation (agar, grain, bulk substrate, and fruiting); this class covers the first phase. More education and practice will be needed to get a crop of mushrooms to the table, but you’ll get skills and understand the mindset needed. Gain the experience and confidence to make healthy mushroom cultures on agar using spores, liquid culture, fresh mushrooms, or a petri dish culture. Students keep the cultures they make in class and get resources for taking the next steps. Zach Kiser has a degree in horticulture from CSU where he learned these techniques and has successfully grown and fruited seven species of mushroom in his small apartment. He is excited to help you dip your toe into the process of growing your own mushrooms for culinary or medicinal purposes.
