Mindfulness for Beginners

Mindfulness is the ability to be fully present in the moment. It is a capacity we all have, but goings on around us and the chatter in our own minds can make it difficult to access it. This introductory workshop is for people interested in learning mindfulness practices for day-to-day life to improve wellness, reduce stress and anxiety, and build greater resilience. Explore how meditation affects us and what it means to develop mindful presence. Experience different methods to quiet your mind. Discuss concepts such as loving kindness and compassion. We’ll talk about feelings and emotions, thoughts and the mind, and wise intention and embodiment. We’ll look at how you might begin to develop a daily practice. Amy Rowland, Ph.D., MSW, MDiv is a teacher, philosopher, and therapist who has been meditating for over 25 years. She teaches at DU’s social work school and has a private therapy practice. She is currently completing the mindfulness meditation teacher certification program with Jack Kornfield and Tara Brach.
