Set The Scene: Writing About Place
You want to make your writing come alive and stand apart from the others. Plot is important, but the key is bringing the reader into the experience in a real and vivid way. This workshop gives you skills for connecting your reader at a gut level with the setting in which your story takes place and evoking the emotions inherent to that place. Class begins with a look at some of the best writers for inspiration. In class writing exercises allow us to apply what we learn to bring exterior and interior settings to life. Bring your own photographs of landscapes or interior spaces that you would like to capture. We’ll also discuss some pitfalls to avoid which make writing go flat. This course is suitable for both fiction and nonfiction, but leans toward the literary. Randi Samuelson-Brown is the author of The Beaten Territory, a Tattered Cover staff pick set in Denver and Leadville in the 1890s.
