Short Story Writing

One of the most beloved and challenging, forms of writing, the short story, can be incredibly powerful. It tackles everything a longer piece of work needs to achieve, but in a bite-size length that allows writers to analyze better what’s working and what’s not. In this course, we’ll cover what a short story is, or isn’t, and identify elements that are essential for a story to succeed. Prior to class, the instructor will ask students to read examples of classic stories for discussion. We’ll learn from the greats how best to work with character, narration, point of view, description, tone, and voice and apply what we learn in short, in-class exercises. A full-time writer, Sara Webster earned her MFA from New York University’s creative writing program and studied creative writing (and media arts) at the University of Arizona. She writes short fiction, digital content, marketing materials, andshe’s working on her first novel. Writers of all levels of experience are welcome.
