Beginning Genealogy: Find Your Family

We live in a golden age for family history research; technology has made it possible for anyone to explore their own family’s past. But getting started and doing it well can be overwhelming. This course is a user-friendly introduction to genealogical search. We start with an overview of the resources available, both online and offline, and discuss the best strategies for conducting and documenting your search. Get tips on how to interpret various kinds of records and how to avoid the common pitfalls that hobbyists encounter. Discuss the pros and cons of available DNA tests. Participants will use what they learn to begin their own searches and get direction and ideas from the group. Professional genealogist Leah Klocek is an avid student of history and is completing her certificate in genealogical studies with a specialty in American records. She consults with individuals keen to trace their ancestry and is excited to offer this class to give more people the tools to succeed.
